It is estimated that about 1 in 9 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Furthermore, approximately 77% of invasive breast cancer cases are diagnosed in women over the age of 50. However, if detected early, the survival rate can reach up to 90%.
BRCA stands for “breast cancer gene” and pertains to two specific genes: BRCA1 and BRCA2. These genes are categorized as “tumor suppressor genes” due to their role in repairing DNA breaks that could lead to cancer. Testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations is crucial for assessing breast cancer risk.
Early detection through this testing can significantly mitigate the impact of this potentially devastating disease on women.
Chughtai Lab: At your Service for Early Detection
At the Breast Clinic, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive breast health services including screening and medical tests that can make a significant difference in early cancer detection and treatment outcomes. Our clinic offers free examinations(mammogram), ensuring that all women have access to essential diagnostic tools without delay. All screening laboratories tests are performed by a female staff, including a female oncologist and surgeon, creating a comfortable and supportive environment for our patients.
Understanding Mammography
Diagnostic mammogram is a specialized radiographic technique used to create detailed images of the breast. This technology, performed by Radiologic Technologist, is a crucial tool in the early detection of breast cancer, especially for women at moderate to high risk. Early detection can significantly improve survival rate, making regular screening vital for women’s health.
Diagnostic and Screening Mammograms
Understanding the difference between diagnostic and screening mammograms is essential for appropriate breast health management.
Screening Mammograms
Screening mammograms are designed for asymptomatic women, aiming to identify abnormal changes in the breast at an early, potentially curable stage. These mammograms are crucial for detecting breast cancer in women who show no symptoms, such as a palpable lump or nipple discharge.
Diagnostic Mammograms
On the other hand, diagnostic mammograms are recommended by doctors to investigate specific breast abnormalities. If a woman experiences symptoms like a palpable lump, pain, nipple discharge, or changes in breast skin, a diagnostic mammogram helps determine the cause of these symptoms.
Who Should Get a Screening Mammogram?
We recommend that women aged 40 and above undergo annual screening mammograms. Additionally, women at high risk of developing breast cancer should consult their doctor about beginning screenings 10 years earlier, but not before the age of 30. Factors influencing breast cancer risk include BRCA gene mutations, a history of radiation exposure between the ages of 10 and 30, and a strong family history of breast cancer.
Who Should Get a Diagnostic Mammogram?
For younger women, especially those under 40, the dense breast tissue can make mammograms less effective. Therefore, we recommend regular breast self-exams. In settings with limited access to mammography, breast self-exams are invaluable. If a woman detects any unusual symptoms during a self-exam, such as a lump or nipple discharge, she should consult a doctor who may recommend a diagnostic mammogram. While not all lumps are cancerous, a biopsy may be necessary to determine whether a mass is benign or malignant.
Introducing the Pink Card: An Initiative for Women’s Health
Recognizing the pivotal role women play in families and communities, we launched the Pink Card (medical discount card) initiative to prioritize women’s health. Our observation revealed that women, particularly mothers, often neglect their health due to financial constraints or other responsibilities. To address this, we introduced discounts on women-related medical tests.
Building on the success of our Chughtai Healthcare Blue Card and Diabetes Health Card, we now offer the Chughtai Healthcare Pink Card. This exclusive card encourages women to prioritize their health with substantial discounts and services.
