A calcium blood test (also called serum calcium or S. calcium test) measures the amount of calcium in your blood. It is one of the most commonly ordered tests in routine metabolic panels and is used to assess bone health, kidney function, parathyroid gland disorders, and certain hormonal conditions. The calcium test price in Pakistan at Chughtai Lab starts from Rs. 1,200 depending on the type of test ordered.

Important: The serum calcium blood test is different from a CAC scan (Coronary Artery Calcium score test). A CAC scan is a CT scan that checks calcium deposits in heart arteries. A serum calcium test is a blood test that checks calcium levels in your blood. If your doctor ordered a "calcium test," it is most likely the blood test described on this page.

What is a calcium blood test?

Calcium is an essential mineral in the human body. Your blood contains around 1% of the calcium in your body, while teeth and bones store 99% of it. The right amount of calcium in your blood is essential for the proper functioning of your heart, muscles, and nerves. Additionally, it facilitates the release of hormones that impact several bodily processes and helps blood vessels transport blood throughout the body.

A calcium blood test - also known as a serum calcium test or S. calcium test - quantifies the amount of calcium circulating in your blood. It is routinely included in basic and comprehensive metabolic panels (BMP/CMP) ordered during regular checkups, hospital admissions, and pre-operative evaluations.

Other names you may see on a lab request for this test include: Ca test, Calcium serum, S. Ca, Ca++, or Total calcium.

Types of calcium tests - which one do you need?

There are three calcium blood tests available at Chughtai Lab. Understanding the difference helps you confirm you are getting the right one:

Calcium test comparison

Total Calcium - Rs. 1,705
Measures both protein-bound and free calcium. The standard first test ordered in routine checkups and metabolic panels. Most common.
Ionized Calcium - Rs. 1,200
Measures only the biologically active free calcium. More precise. Ordered when total calcium is borderline or when albumin levels are unknown.
Corrected Calcium - Rs. 1,749
Adjusts the total calcium reading for low albumin levels. Required for patients with liver disease, malnutrition, nephrotic syndrome, or critical illness where albumin is low.
CAC Scan - NOT this test
A CT scan for the heart measuring calcium in coronary arteries. Completely different from a serum calcium blood test. Available at Chughtai Lab Radiology.

If your doctor has ordered a "calcium test" without specifying which type, it is almost always the Total Calcium (Serum Calcium) test. When in doubt, contact your doctor or call Chughtai Lab at 03-111-456-789.

Free home sample collection available across Pakistan. A trained phlebotomist visits you at your chosen time - no lab visit needed.

Why is a calcium test ordered?

As part of your regular examination, your doctor may have prescribed a basic or comprehensive metabolic panel, which includes a calcium blood test. Additionally, if you have symptoms of abnormal calcium levels or disorders that can affect your blood calcium, you may undergo this test to monitor or identify them.

Symptoms of high blood calcium (hypercalcemia)

  • Digestive symptoms such as constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst and urinating more than usual
  • Kidney stones
  • Fatigue and general weakness
  • Bone, joint, and muscle pain
  • Confusion, depression, or changes in mental health

Symptoms of low blood calcium (hypocalcemia)

  • Dry skin, coarse hair, brittle nails
  • Muscle cramps, spasms, or stiffness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Tingling in the lips, tongue, fingers, and feet
  • Seizures in severe cases

Many individuals with either high or low serum calcium levels show no symptoms at all. This is why calcium is included in routine metabolic panels - it can detect problems before symptoms develop.

Your doctor may also prescribe a calcium test if you have a known condition that affects calcium levels, such as kidney disease, thyroid or parathyroid disease, malnutrition, Vitamin D deficiency, or certain cancers.

How to prepare for a calcium blood test

If a serum calcium test is your only test, no fasting is required. You can eat and drink normally before the test.

However, the calcium test is often included as part of a basic metabolic panel (BMP) or comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), which measures multiple substances in your blood at once. In this case, your doctor may ask you to fast for 8 to 10 hours before the test.

Additional preparation notes:

  • Inform your doctor or the collection staff about all medications you are taking, including calcium supplements, antacids, diuretics, and Vitamin D supplements - these can affect your results
  • Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before the test if instructed by your doctor
  • Wear a short-sleeved shirt to allow easy access for blood collection
  • Drink plenty of water before the test - being hydrated makes blood collection easier

The risks of the test are minimal. You may experience slight discomfort or bruising at the needle insertion point, which typically resolves quickly.

Normal calcium levels - what does your result mean?

Calcium test results are measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Reference ranges can vary slightly between labs:

TestNormal rangeAction needed
Total calcium (adults)8.5 - 10.2 mg/dLNo action if within range
Ionized calcium4.4 - 5.2 mg/dLNo action if within range
High calcium (hypercalcemia)Above 10.5 mg/dLConsult your doctor
Low calcium (hypocalcemia)Below 8.5 mg/dLConsult your doctor
Severely low (urgent)Below 7.0 mg/dLSeek medical attention

A single abnormal result does not always indicate disease. Certain medicines, dietary habits, and albumin levels can affect the reading. Your physician will interpret the result in the context of your symptoms and other tests before making any clinical decision.

What does a high calcium level mean?

If your test results show that your blood calcium levels are higher than normal (hypercalcemia), your doctor may investigate for:

  • Hyperparathyroidism (overactive parathyroid gland) - the most common cause in outpatients
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Kidney failure
  • Tuberculosis or sarcoidosis
  • Addison's disease
  • Lung cancer, breast cancer, or certain blood cancers
  • Metastatic bone tumors or Paget's disease of the bone
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Vitamin D intoxication from excess supplementation
  • Prolonged immobilization

If your results are high, your doctor may request follow-up tests including parathyroid hormone (PTH), Vitamin D, phosphorus, and urine calcium before making a diagnosis.

What does a low calcium level mean?

If the results show that your blood calcium levels are below normal (hypocalcemia), your doctor may investigate for:

  • Hypoparathyroidism (underactive parathyroid gland)
  • Vitamin D deficiency - extremely common in Pakistan
  • Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium)
  • Osteomalacia (softening of bones)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Kidney failure or chronic kidney disease
  • Liver disease causing low albumin (in this case, corrected calcium test is more accurate)
  • Celiac disease or other malabsorption conditions

Note: A calcium blood test does not tell you how much calcium is in your bones. To assess bone mineral density, a DEXA scan is needed. Low blood calcium and low bone density are related but different findings - you may have low bone calcium (osteoporosis) with normal blood calcium levels.

Chughtai Lab is CAP-accredited - the highest international standard for diagnostic lab quality. Your calcium test result is reviewed by our pathologists before release.

About CAP Accreditation

Calcium and Vitamin D - what Pakistani patients should know

Pakistan has one of the highest rates of Vitamin D deficiency in the world. This matters directly for your calcium test results because Vitamin D is required for calcium absorption from the intestine. Without adequate Vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium from food properly - even if your diet is calcium-rich.

This means:

  • Low blood calcium in Pakistani patients is frequently caused by Vitamin D deficiency, not just low calcium intake
  • If your calcium is low, your doctor will almost always also check your Vitamin D level
  • Treating low calcium without also correcting Vitamin D deficiency is often ineffective
  • Calcium supplements alone will not raise blood calcium if Vitamin D is severely deficient

Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or covering their skin outdoors are at particularly high risk of both Vitamin D and calcium deficiency in Pakistan. If you are in these groups, discuss screening with your doctor even without obvious symptoms.

Chughtai Lab offers a combined Vitamin D test (25-OH Vitamin D) alongside the calcium test if your doctor recommends both.

FAQs

What is the calcium test price in Pakistan at Chughtai Lab?+
Chughtai Lab offers three calcium tests: Serum Calcium (Total) at Rs. 1,705, Serum Calcium (Ionized) at Rs. 1,200, and Serum Calcium (Corrected) at Rs. 1,749. Home sample collection is free of charge across Pakistan. These are fixed prices with no hidden charges.
What is the calcium test name in Pakistan?+
The calcium blood test goes by several names: Serum Calcium test, S. Calcium test, Ca test, Total calcium test, or Calcium serum test. All refer to the same blood test measuring calcium levels. It is also sometimes called ionized calcium or corrected calcium depending on which type is ordered. This is different from a CAC scan which is a heart imaging test.
Is the calcium test the same as a CAC scan or calcium score test?+
No. These are completely different tests. A CAC scan (Coronary Artery Calcium score) is a CT scan that measures calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to assess heart disease risk - it is a radiology procedure. A serum calcium test is a simple blood test that measures calcium levels in your blood to assess bone health, kidney function, and hormonal disorders. If your doctor ordered a routine "calcium test," it is almost certainly the blood test, not a CAC scan.
What is the difference between total, ionized, and corrected calcium?+
Total calcium (Rs. 1,705) measures both protein-bound and free calcium and is the standard first test. Ionized calcium (Rs. 1,200) measures only the biologically active free calcium - more precise when albumin is abnormal. Corrected calcium (Rs. 1,749) adjusts the total calcium reading for low albumin levels, needed for patients with liver disease, malnutrition, or critical illness. Your doctor will specify which one is required.
Is fasting required for a calcium blood test?+
If the calcium test is your only test, no fasting is required. However, if it is part of a basic or comprehensive metabolic panel (which is common), your doctor may ask you to fast for 8 to 10 hours. Inform the collection staff of all medications and supplements you are taking as these can affect results.
Is home sample collection available for a calcium test at Chughtai Lab?+
Yes. Chughtai Lab offers free home sample collection for the serum calcium test across Pakistan. A trained phlebotomist visits your home at a time you choose. Book online at chughtailab.com, through the Chughtai Lab mobile app, or call 03-111-456-789. Home collection is available in all major cities.
How do I check for calcium deficiency?+
A serum calcium blood test checks calcium levels in your blood. However, blood calcium can be normal even when bone calcium is low. If you suspect calcium deficiency, your doctor may order a serum calcium test along with a Vitamin D test, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and sometimes a DEXA scan (bone density). In Pakistan, Vitamin D deficiency is the most common cause of low blood calcium, so both are usually checked together.
Can I view my calcium test results online?+
Yes. Chughtai Lab sends an SMS when your report is ready. You can view results online through the patient portal or the Chughtai Lab mobile app, available on iOS and Android. Results are also available via WhatsApp.
Should I be concerned if my calcium result is slightly high or low?+
Not necessarily. A single mildly abnormal result does not always indicate disease. Certain medicines such as antacids, calcium supplements, diuretics, and Vitamin D supplements can temporarily affect calcium levels. Your doctor will interpret the result in the context of your symptoms, medications, and other tests. Always consult your physician before making any changes based on lab results.
How can I book a serum calcium test at Chughtai Lab?+
You can book online at chughtailab.com, through the Chughtai Lab mobile app, or by calling 03-111-456-789. Free home sample collection is available across Pakistan. To find your nearest collection center, visit the Chughtai Lab locations page.
