Purpose of the Test

A single knee ap and lat view X-ray may be ordered by a healthcare provider to evaluate for various conditions affecting the knee joint, such as arthritis, fractures, dislocations, and bone tumors.

When this test is required

A healthcare provider may order a single knee ap and lat view X-ray if a person has symptoms of knee pain, swelling, stiffness, limited range of motion, or a popping/cracking sound during movement. The X-ray may also be ordered if a person has a history of knee injury, arthritis, or bone cancer.

What the Test Detects

A single knee ap and lat view X-ray produces two images of the knee joint from two different angles. The AP (anteroposterior) view shows the front and back of the knee joint, while the lateral view shows the side of the knee joint. The X-ray images help to evaluate the alignment, spacing, and shape of the bones that form the knee joint.

Preparation for the Test

There is no special preparation needed for a single knee ap and lat view X-ray. However, the person may be asked to remove any metal objects such as jewelry or clothing with metal fasteners that may interfere with the image.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

X-rays use a small amount of ionizing radiation, so pregnant women or those who may be pregnant should inform their healthcare provider before undergoing this test. In some cases, a single knee ap and lat view X-ray may not provide enough information, and additional imaging tests, such as MRI or CT scan, may be needed to further evaluate the knee joint.
