Purpose of the Test

A lateral cervical spine X-ray is usually requested to evaluate any injury or abnormalities in the cervical spine such as fractures, dislocations, spinal stenosis, degenerative changes, or other conditions that may be causing neck pain, numbness, or weakness.

When this test is required

A lateral cervical spine X-ray may be ordered if the patient has any symptoms of cervical spine injury or if a doctor suspects any degenerative changes or deformities in the cervical spine.

What the Test Detects

A lateral cervical spine X-ray is a diagnostic imaging test that uses X-rays to produce detailed images of the side view of the seven vertebrae in the neck region of the spine. The image produced by the X-ray shows the alignment and curvature of the cervical spine, and can help detect any injuries or abnormalities.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is usually required for a lateral cervical spine X-ray. However, the patient should wear loose, comfortable clothing, and may be asked to remove any jewelry, metal objects or clothing that might interfere with the X-ray images.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for an X-ray.

Additional Notes

As with all X-rays, a lateral cervical spine X-ray exposes the patient to a small amount of radiation, but the risk is very low. Pregnant women should inform their doctor or radiology technologist before having an X-ray.
