Purpose of the Test

The urinary calcium/creatinine ratio (UCa/Cr) test is primarily used to evaluate the amount of calcium being eliminated by the body in the urine. It helps in assessing the risk of developing kidney stones and bone diseases, such as osteoporosis.

When this test is required

The test is requested when there are signs or symptoms of kidney stones or calcium metabolism disorders, such as bone pain or fractures, muscle weakness, or urinary tract symptoms. It may also be ordered to monitor the progress of treatment for these conditions.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the amount of calcium and creatinine in a random spot urine sample. Creatinine is a waste product produced by muscles and eliminated from the body in the urine. The ratio of calcium to creatinine in the urine is calculated and reported.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is needed for the test. However, the healthcare provider may recommend temporarily discontinuing any calcium supplements before the test.
