Purpose of the Test

An ultrasound for AVF mapping is performed to determine the location, size, and suitability of veins and arteries for the creation of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF). An AVF is a surgical connection between an artery and a vein that is created to provide easy access for hemodialysis treatments for patients with kidney failure. This test helps the physician to identify a suitable vein for hemodialysis access.

When this test is required

An ultrasound for AVF mapping is typically requested by a nephrologist or a surgeon before performing AVF placement surgery. It may also be requested periodically after the surgery to monitor the patency of the AVF and detect any complications.

What the Test Detects

During the test, high-frequency sound waves are used to produce real-time images of the veins and arteries in the arms and legs. The ultrasound technician uses a handheld device called a transducer and places it on the skin over the area of interest. The sound waves are reflected off the blood vessels and detected by the transducer, which generates images that are displayed on a monitor.

Preparation for the Test

There is usually no specific preparation required for an ultrasound for AVF mapping. However, the healthcare provider may ask the patient to drink water before the procedure to fill the bladder and enhance the visualization of the pelvic veins.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

The test is painless and non-invasive, and there is no radiation exposure. The ultrasound technician may ask the patient to change positions during the test to obtain images from different angles. The results of the test are usually available immediately, and the physician can discuss the findings and plan further treatment if necessary.
