Purpose of the Test

The test may be ordered to evaluate a person who has experienced symptoms of a stroke, such as sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, or sudden vision problems.

When this test is required

The test is typically requested when a person shows symptoms of a stroke, such as sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, or sudden vision problems. It may also be requested to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for a stroke.

What the Test Detects

The test evaluates the brain and blood vessels in the head and neck using MRI and MRA imaging techniques. These tests can detect the presence of a stroke, as well as identify any blockages or narrowing in the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain.

Preparation for the Test

Patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test and to remove any metal objects, including jewelry and clothing with metal fastenings, as they can interfere with the MRI image.

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

The stroke package may be performed in an emergency setting, and immediate treatment may be necessary if a stroke is identified. The test is typically performed in a hospital or imaging center and can take up to an hour or more to complete.
