Purpose of the Test

The test is ordered to diagnose or monitor allergies, especially those related to food, pollen, and certain drugs. It may also be ordered to evaluate suspected asthma or other respiratory conditions.

The test may be requested when a person has symptoms of allergies, such as runny nose, itchy eyes, or skin rash. It may also be ordered to evaluate suspected asthma or other respiratory conditions.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the amount of IgE in the blood.

No specific preparation is needed for the test.

A blood sample is required for the test.

Additional Notes

The presence of IgE antibodies does not always mean that a person has an allergy. In addition, some people may have a genetic deficiency of IgE, which may not be detected by this test. The interpretation of the test result should always be made in conjunction with a person’s medical history and other laboratory tests.
