Purpose of the Test

Serum anti-tissue transglutaminase (TTG) IgG test is primarily used to help diagnose and monitor the treatment of celiac disease in patients who have IgA deficiency or who have IgA antibodies directed against human tissue transglutaminase (tTG).

When this test is required

The test is requested when a healthcare provider suspects celiac disease, particularly in those with IgA deficiency or those who have tested negative for IgA anti-TTG antibodies. The test may also be used to monitor treatment of the disease.

What the Test Detects

This test measures the level of anti-tissue transglutaminase (TTG) IgG antibodies in the blood. TTG is an enzyme that plays a role in various cellular processes and is found in several organs, including the gut. In individuals with celiac disease, the immune system reacts abnormally to TTG, leading to damage in the lining of the small intestine. This test detects IgG antibodies produced by the immune system in response to TTG.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is needed for the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample.

Additional Notes

The serum anti-TTG IgG test is not useful in diagnosing celiac disease in individuals with IgA antibodies directed against human tissue transglutaminase (tTG). In such cases, the anti-tissue transglutaminase (TTG) IgA test is recommended.
