Purpose of the Test

The RH Antibodies (Anti D) test is performed to determine the presence of antibodies against the D antigen on red blood cells. This test is typically ordered for women who are pregnant, Rh-negative, and who may be at risk of developing antibodies against the D antigen.

When this test is required

The test is typically ordered during the first trimester of pregnancy, around 28 weeks of gestation, and after delivery if the baby is Rh-positive. It may also be ordered if the patient has had a blood transfusion with Rh-positive blood or if they have had a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy.

What the Test Detects

The test detects the presence of antibodies against the D antigen on red blood cells. These antibodies can be produced by the immune system of an Rh-negative person after exposure to Rh-positive red blood cells, either through pregnancy or blood transfusion.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific preparation required for the RH Antibodies (Anti D) test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test, which is typically taken from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

If an Rh-negative woman is pregnant with an Rh-positive fetus, she may receive Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg) during and after pregnancy to prevent the development of Rh antibodies. It is important to follow the healthcare provider’s instructions regarding testing and treatment.
