Purpose of the Test

The Plasma Glucose (2 hrs Postprandial) test is used to measure the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood 2 hours after a meal. It is used to screen for and diagnose diabetes and to monitor glucose levels in people with diabetes.

When this test is required

The test may be requested if a person shows symptoms of diabetes, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss. It may also be requested to monitor glucose levels in people with diabetes who are on medications or insulin therapy.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood 2 hours after a meal. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body’s cells and is regulated by the hormone insulin.

Preparation for the Test

The patient should fast for at least 8 hours before the test and consume a meal containing 75 grams of carbohydrates within 10 minutes of completing the fast.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test, which is typically taken from a vein in the arm.

The Plasma Glucose (2 hrs Postprandial) test is just one of several tests used to diagnose and monitor diabetes.
