Purpose of the Test

The MRI wrist without contrast is used to diagnose conditions such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglion cysts, ligament and tendon injuries, fractures, and tumors.

When this test is required

An MRI wrist without contrast may be requested by a doctor if a patient is experiencing wrist pain, stiffness, or swelling, or if a previous X-ray or other imaging test was inconclusive.

What the Test Detects

The MRI wrist without contrast produces detailed images of the bones, joints, and soft tissues of the wrist, including the ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. This allows doctors to identify any abnormalities or injuries.

Preparation for the Test

Before the MRI, patients may be asked to remove all metal objects from their body, as these can interfere with the magnetic field of the machine. Additionally, patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI wrist without contrast is a safe and noninvasive test. However, it is not recommended for patients with certain medical conditions, such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or cochlear implants, as the magnetic field can interfere with these devices. Patients should inform their doctor if they have any implanted medical devices or if they are pregnant before undergoing an MRI wrist without contrast.
