Purpose of the Test

This test is typically requested to help diagnose or monitor conditions affecting the knee joint, such as ligament or tendon injuries, cartilage damage, arthritis, tumors, or infection.

When this test is required

An MRI knee joint with contrast may be requested when other imaging tests, such as X-rays or ultrasound, are not able to provide enough information about the knee joint. It may also be used to monitor the progression of a known knee condition or to assess the effectiveness of a treatment.

What the Test Detects

During an MRI knee joint with contrast, a contrast agent (a dye that enhances the visibility of certain structures) is injected into a vein in your arm. The contrast agent travels through your bloodstream to the knee joint, where it highlights the soft tissues and blood vessels.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, you should inform your healthcare provider if you have any metal implants, pacemaker, or other medical devices, as these may interfere with the MRI scan. You may also be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period before the test.

Sample Requirements

No samples are required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI knee joint with contrast is generally safe and painless, but some people may experience mild discomfort or allergic reactions to the contrast agent. You should inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, have kidney problems, or have had a previous allergic reaction to contrast agents.
