Purpose of the Test

This test is usually ordered by doctors to evaluate various organs and tissues in the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. It is commonly used to look for tumors or abnormalities in the liver, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, and other organs. It can also help diagnose certain conditions such as cancer, infections, and inflammatory diseases.

When this test is required

The test is usually requested when other imaging tests such as X-rays or ultrasound are not sufficient in providing a clear diagnosis. It may also be requested if you have a history of cancer or other conditions that affect these areas.

What the Test Detects

This test evaluates the chest, abdomen, and pelvis using a contrast agent to produce highly detailed images of organs, blood vessels, and tissues in these areas. The contrast agent is usually injected into a vein in your arm before the test.

Preparation for the Test

Prior to the test, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for several hours. You may also be asked to remove any metal objects and jewelry, and wear loose-fitting clothing. Your doctor may also ask you to stop taking certain medications that may interfere with the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

The contrast agent used in the test may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or allergic reactions in some people. Be sure to inform your doctor if you have any allergies or other health conditions that may put you at risk of complications from the contrast agent.
