Purpose of the Test

The test is useful in evaluating and monitoring a range of medical conditions, such as cancer, infections, inflammation, and injuries. It can help identify and track the progression of tumors, assess the response to treatment, detect the spread of cancer to other areas of the body, and identify areas of inflammation or infection.

When this test is required

The MR continuation scan with contrast is typically ordered by a physician as a follow-up to a previous MRI scan that was performed without contrast. It may also be ordered periodically to monitor the progression of a chronic condition or in cases where a new medical concern arises.

What the Test Detects

The MR continuation scan with contrast is used to produce detailed images of the body’s internal structures, including organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues. The contrast agent injected into the patient’s bloodstream helps highlight certain tissues and blood vessels, making them easier to see on the images.

Preparation for the Test

The patient should inform their doctor of any allergies or medical conditions they may have, especially if they have a history of kidney disease or problems with gadolinium-based contrast agents. The patient will also need to remove any metal objects before the test, as they can interfere with the MRI machine. In some cases, the patient may need to fast for a few hours prior to the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for an MR continuation scan with contrast. However, the patient will need to have an intravenous (IV) line inserted for the contrast agent injection.

Additional Notes

While the test is generally considered safe, there is a small risk of an allergic reaction to the contrast agent. Patients should inform their doctor of any allergies or medical conditions they may have before the test. In rare cases, the contrast agent can cause kidney damage in patients with pre-existing kidney disease. Patients should drink plenty of water after the test to help flush the contrast agent from their system.
