Purpose of the Test

An MRI of the abdomen and pelvis with and without contrast may be ordered by a doctor to diagnose conditions such as tumors, infections, inflammation, or abnormalities in the organs in the abdomen and pelvis.

When this test is required

An MRI of the abdomen and pelvis with and without contrast may be requested by a doctor if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits, or blood in the urine or stool. It may also be ordered if a previous imaging test was inconclusive.

What the Test Detects

The MRI of the abdomen and pelvis with and without contrast produces detailed images of the organs and structures in the abdomen and pelvis, including the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder, and reproductive organs. The contrast material used in the test can help to highlight areas of abnormality, such as tumors, inflammation, or areas of infection.

Preparation for the Test

Before the MRI, patients may be asked to remove all metal objects from their body, as these can interfere with the magnetic field of the machine. Additionally, patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test. Patients may also be asked if they have any implanted medical devices or if they are pregnant before undergoing an MRI with contrast.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI of the abdomen and pelvis with and without contrast is a safe and noninvasive test. However, the contrast material used in the test can sometimes cause an allergic reaction, so patients should inform their doctor if they have a history of allergic reactions or if they are pregnant before undergoing an MRI with contrast. Additionally, patients with certain medical conditions, such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or cochlear implants, may not be able to undergo an MRI.
