Purpose of the Test

The Growth Hormone Stimulation Test (by Exercise) is a medical test used to evaluate the functioning of the pituitary gland, which produces the growth hormone. This test is performed to diagnose growth hormone deficiency, gigantism, acromegaly, and other related conditions.

When this test is required

The test is typically requested for children who have shown delayed growth or short stature and adults who show signs of GH deficiency, such as decreased muscle mass and energy levels, increased body fat, and decreased bone density.

What the Test Detects

During the test, the patient is asked to perform a physical activity, such as riding a stationary bicycle or running on a treadmill, while their GH levels are monitored. The test measures the amount of GH released in response to the exercise, and how long it takes for the levels to return to normal.

Preparation for the Test

To prepare for the test, a person may need to avoid certain medications that can interfere with the test results, such as glucocorticoids, estrogen, and testosterone. Additionally, a person may need to fast for several hours before the test, and avoid caffeine and strenuous exercise the day before the test. It’s important to follow any specific instructions given by the healthcare provider to ensure accurate test results.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required to measure the growth hormone levels. Usually, a healthcare provider will take several blood samples before and after exercise to track the changes in growth hormone levels.

Additional Notes

The GH Stimulation Test may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, or heart disease, and it should only be performed under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
