Purpose of the Test

The eosinophil count in sputum is usually ordered to help diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and eosinophilic pneumonia. The test can help determine the extent of inflammation and can also help evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

When this test is required

The test is usually requested when a patient has symptoms of respiratory conditions such as cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness.
