Purpose of the Test

Entamoeba histolytica antibodies test is used to detect the presence of antibodies against the Entamoeba histolytica parasite in the blood. This test is ordered to confirm the diagnosis of amoebiasis, a parasitic infection that can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea and abdominal pain.

When this test is required

This test is requested when a person has symptoms of amoebiasis or has a history of exposure to the parasite.

What the Test Detects

This test detects the presence of antibodies against the Entamoeba histolytica parasite in the blood. When the body is infected with the parasite, the immune system produces specific antibodies to fight it. These antibodies can be detected in the blood and can confirm the diagnosis of amoebiasis.

No special preparation is usually required for this test.

Additional Notes

The Entamoeba histolytica antibodies test is not used to screen for the parasite in the general population, as many people who are infected with the parasite do not develop symptoms. The test is only ordered when there is a suspicion of amoebiasis.
