Purpose of the Test

The test may be requested by a healthcare provider when a patient has symptoms of a dengue virus infection, such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and rash. It may also be performed in areas where dengue virus is prevalent, as a part of surveillance programs or to screen people who are at risk of the disease.

When this test is required

To perform the test, a small sample of blood is drawn from a vein in the arm. No special preparation is required before the test. However, it is important to inform the healthcare provider about any medications or supplements that the patient is taking, as they may affect the test results.

What the Test Detects

Dengue virus IgG testing is a blood test that measures the presence of antibodies called immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the blood. The test is used to determine whether a person has been infected with the dengue virus in the past and has developed antibodies to it.

Preparation for the Test

The presence of IgG antibodies to dengue virus indicates that the person has been infected with the virus in the past, and their immune system has developed a response to it. However, the test does not distinguish between recent and past infections, and cannot be used to diagnose an acute dengue virus infection. A healthcare provider will use the test results, along with other clinical and laboratory findings, to make a diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test. No special preparation is needed before the test, although it is important to inform the healthcare provider about any medications or supplements that the patient is taking, as they may affect the test results.
