Purpose of the Test

Chromosomal analysis or karyotyping from bone marrow may be ordered by a healthcare provider to help diagnose and monitor various blood and bone marrow disorders such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndrome. It can also help identify chromosomal abnormalities that can cause genetic disorders.

When this test is required

Chromosomal analysis from bone marrow is typically ordered when a patient has abnormal blood counts, unexplained bruising or bleeding, frequent infections, and/or bone pain. It can also be ordered when a patient is suspected to have a chromosomal abnormality or a genetic disorder.

What the Test Detects

Chromosomal analysis or karyotyping from bone marrow involves examining the chromosomes in the patient’s bone marrow cells. This test can detect changes in the number or structure of chromosomes, which can help diagnose genetic disorders and blood and bone marrow disorders.

Preparation for the Test

The patient may need to fast for a few hours before the procedure. The healthcare provider will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for the procedure.

Sample Requirements

A sample of bone marrow is obtained from the patient’s hip bone using a needle.

Additional Notes

The bone marrow biopsy procedure may cause some discomfort, but it is generally well-tolerated by most patients. The results of the test may take several days to a few weeks to become available. A healthcare provider will explain the test results and their implications to the patient.
