Purpose of the Test

The test is ordered to detect the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis and/or Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria in a person’s genital, rectal or oral secretions. These bacteria can cause infections in the genital and urinary tracts, as well as other areas of the body, and can lead to serious health problems if left untreated.

When this test is required

The CTNG test is usually requested when a person has symptoms of an STI, such as discharge from the genitals or pain during urination. The test may also be requested if a person has had unprotected sex with a partner who has a known STI or if a healthcare provider suspects that a person may have been exposed to an STI.

What the Test Detects

The Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (CTNG) test is used to detect the presence of these two bacteria in a person’s genital, rectal, or oral secretions.

Preparation for the Test

There is usually no special preparation needed for a CTNG test. However, you should let your healthcare provider know about any medications you are taking, as some medications can affect the results of the test. It is also important to avoid urinating or engaging in sexual activity for at least one hour before providing a urine sample for the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a sample of the person’s genital, rectal or oral secretions. Depending on the location of the suspected infection, a urine sample, a swab of the genitals, rectum or throat, or a specimen obtained during a pelvic exam may be collected.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that false-negative results can occur with the CTNG test, especially if the test is performed too soon after exposure to the bacteria. It is also possible for a person to have an STI without showing any symptoms, so it is important to get tested regularly if you are sexually active.
