Purpose of the Test

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that is produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. It can be inhaled and absorbed into the bloodstream, where it binds to hemoglobin and reduces the ability of the blood to carry oxygen. A blood test for carbon monoxide is used to measure the amount of carbon monoxide that has been absorbed into the bloodstream.

When this test is required

The test is typically ordered when an individual has symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning or has been exposed to an environment where carbon monoxide exposure is possible.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the amount of carbon monoxide that has been absorbed into the bloodstream, and is reported as the percentage of hemoglobin that is bound to carbon monoxide (carboxyhemoglobin). The normal range for carboxyhemoglobin is typically less than 2%, but levels can be significantly higher in individuals who have been exposed to carbon monoxide.

Preparation for the Test

There is typically no specific preparation required for this test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that carbon monoxide poisoning can be a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, and immediate medical attention is necessary if exposure is suspected.
