Purpose of the Test

Ascitic fluid testing for fungus stain and culture is ordered to diagnose fungal infections of the abdominal cavity or peritoneal cavity, also known as fungal peritonitis. Fungal peritonitis can occur in people with cirrhosis, peritoneal dialysis, or other conditions that compromise the immune system.

When this test is required

An ascitic fluid test for fungus C/S and fungus stain may be requested if a person with cirrhosis or peritoneal dialysis has symptoms of a fungal infection, such as abdominal pain, fever, and a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. The test may also be ordered if the person is not responding to antibiotics or other treatments for an abdominal infection.

What the Test Detects

Ascitic fluid testing for fungus C/S (culture and sensitivity) and fungus stain is used to identify the presence of fungal infections in the abdominal cavity or peritoneal cavity. Fungal infections of the abdominal cavity can cause a serious and potentially life-threatening condition called fungal peritonitis. The test can help to identify the type of fungus that is causing the infection, as well as determine the best treatment options.

Preparation for the Test

There is generally no special preparation needed for an ascitic fluid test for fungus stain and culture. However, a healthcare provider may instruct a person to stop taking certain medications, such as antibiotics or antifungal medications, before the test to ensure accurate results. It is important to follow any instructions provided by the healthcare provider before the test.

Sample Requirements

To perform the ascitic fluid test for fungus stain and culture, a healthcare provider will collect a sample of ascitic fluid from the abdominal cavity using a needle and syringe. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis

Additional Notes

If the ascitic fluid test is positive for a fungal infection, the healthcare provider may order additional tests, such as blood tests, imaging tests, or biopsy, to determine the extent of the infection and any complications. Treatment for fungal peritonitis may involve the use of antifungal medications, drainage of fluid from the abdomen, and other supportive therapies. It is important to follow the healthcare provider’s instructions closely to ensure the most effective treatment and prevent complications.
