RFT (Renal Function Test) also called RFTS test, Kidney Function Test (KFT), or Renal Profile. Free home sampling. Results within 8 hours.
RFTS test means Renal Function Tests - a group of blood tests used to determine kidney health. RFT is also called Kidney Function Test (KFT), Renal Profile, or RFTS. It measures Serum Urea, Serum Creatinine, eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate), and BUN/Creatinine ratio to assess how well your kidneys are working. The RFT test price in Pakistan at Chughtai Lab is Rs. 1,800 with free home sample collection and results within 8 hours.
What is the Renal Function Test (RFT)?
Kidney health is crucial to living a normal and healthy life; the slightest changes in its function can cause major problems. RFTS test means Renal Function Tests. It is used to determine kidney health. It can be done from a simple blood sample to analyze the overall health of the kidneys.
The kidneys filter waste products and excess water from the blood, producing urine. They also regulate blood pressure, produce red blood cells, and maintain the balance of minerals in your body. When kidneys are not working properly, waste products build up in the blood - the RFT test measures these waste levels to assess kidney function.
The RFT test is one of the most commonly ordered tests in Pakistan due to the high prevalence of diabetes and hypertension - both of which are leading causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

A Renal Function Test (RFT) at Chughtai Lab involves examining the following parameters:
| Parameter | What it measures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Serum Urea | Urea (waste product from protein breakdown) in blood | High urea indicates kidneys are not filtering waste properly |
| Serum Creatinine | Creatinine (waste product from muscle use) in blood | Most reliable single marker of kidney function |
| eGFR | Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate - how much blood kidneys filter per minute | Used to stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) from Stage 1 to 5 |
| BUN/Creatinine ratio | Ratio of Blood Urea Nitrogen to Creatinine | Helps distinguish kidney problems from dehydration or other causes |
Some doctors may also request additional kidney markers such as Serum Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride), Uric Acid, or a urine test (urinalysis) alongside the RFT. These are separate tests but are often ordered together as part of a comprehensive kidney assessment.
When is a Renal Function Test performed?
People who show symptoms and signs of kidney issues, imbalances, or the following conditions are advised to get an RFT test:
- High blood pressure (hypertension) - a leading cause of kidney damage in Pakistan
- Diabetes - the most common cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide
- Pain during urination or blood in urine
- Swelling in legs, feet, or face (edema)
- Anyone undergoing treatment with medications that can affect kidneys (NSAIDs, antibiotics, contrast dye)
- Anyone experiencing symptoms of kidney disorders
- Patients with a family history of kidney disease
- Routine screening for patients above 40 with diabetes or hypertension
This test is also done as a follow-up test for patients to keep track of improvements and recovery from a kidney disease and rule out the possibility of getting kidney disease back.
Symptoms of kidney problems that warrant an RFT test
Early stage symptoms (often missed)
- Fatigue and weakness without clear reason
- Mild swelling in feet or ankles
- Slight changes in urination frequency or color
- Mild loss of appetite
- Difficulty concentrating
Later stage symptoms
- Severe swelling in legs, feet, or around the eyes
- Decreased urine output
- Shortness of breath (fluid buildup in lungs)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Muscle cramps, especially at night
- Itching all over the body (from waste buildup)
- High blood pressure that is difficult to control
Many patients with kidney disease have no symptoms until the disease is significantly advanced. This is why the RFT test is included in routine health checkups for diabetic and hypertensive patients - to catch kidney damage before symptoms appear.
What are the benefits of the RFT test?
Early detection and diagnosis
RFT test can identify kidney problems even before the symptoms appear. This is critical because kidney disease is often called a "silent disease" - by the time symptoms develop, significant damage may already have occurred.
Monitoring treatment
This test helps ensure the treatment is effective by tracking how well the kidneys respond to treatment. Patients on dialysis, immunosuppressants, or nephrotoxic medications are regularly monitored with RFT.
Assessing disease progression
RFTs can determine the stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) using the eGFR value and help determine the progression of kidney disease. CKD is staged from 1 (mild, eGFR above 90) to 5 (kidney failure, eGFR below 15).
Overall health assessment
RFT test can help identify other potential health problems and provide valuable information about overall kidney function. Abnormal RFT results often prompt investigation for diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disease, and other systemic conditions that affect kidney health.
Chughtai Lab is CAP-accredited. Your RFT results are processed on calibrated analyzers and reviewed by our pathologists before release.
About CAP AccreditationHow to prepare for an RFT test?
Fasting is generally not required for a standalone RFT test. However, if the RFT is ordered as part of a larger panel that includes blood sugar or lipid tests, your doctor may ask you to fast for 8 to 10 hours.
Important points before the test:
- Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking - especially NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac), ACE inhibitors, diuretics, and antibiotics, as these can affect kidney function and test results
- Avoid heavy protein meals (large amounts of meat) the night before - protein metabolism temporarily raises creatinine levels
- Avoid strenuous exercise the day before - muscle breakdown from exercise raises creatinine temporarily
- Stay well hydrated - drink normal amounts of water before the test
- Wear loose-fitting sleeves to allow easy blood collection
RFT test normal range
The RFT normal range varies by age, sex, and muscle mass. General adult reference ranges are:
| Parameter | Normal range (Men) | Normal range (Women) |
|---|---|---|
| Serum Creatinine | 0.74 to 1.35 mg/dL | 0.59 to 1.04 mg/dL |
| Serum Urea | 7 to 20 mg/dL | 7 to 20 mg/dL |
| BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) | 6 to 24 mg/dL | 6 to 24 mg/dL |
| eGFR (normal kidney function) | Above 90 mL/min/1.73m² | Above 90 mL/min/1.73m² |
| eGFR (mild reduction) | 60 to 89 | 60 to 89 |
| eGFR (kidney failure) | Below 15 | Below 15 |
Your bloodstream absorbs creatinine and filters it at a steady rate. Thus, your blood's level of creatinine is relatively constant. If creatinine levels are higher than usual, it can indicate severe kidney disease or impaired renal function.
A timely RFT can help you identify and resolve your kidney-related issues quickly. A slight delay in the process can result in serious complications. The findings of your RFT will help your doctor plan an effective course of treatment.
What do abnormal RFT results mean?
High creatinine and urea
Elevated creatinine and urea indicate that the kidneys are not filtering waste effectively. This can be due to acute kidney injury (sudden), chronic kidney disease (long-term), dehydration, or obstruction in the urinary tract. Your doctor will correlate this with eGFR and clinical history.
Low eGFR
An eGFR below 60 for more than 3 months indicates chronic kidney disease. eGFR is used to stage CKD from Stage 1 to 5. Stage 5 (eGFR below 15) is kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant.
High BUN/Creatinine ratio
A high ratio (above 20:1) often indicates dehydration, high protein intake, or reduced blood flow to kidneys rather than kidney disease itself. A normal or low ratio with high creatinine is more specific to kidney damage.
A single abnormal result does not always mean kidney disease - medications, diet, dehydration, and muscle mass all affect results. Your doctor will interpret results in context with your symptoms and history.
RFT vs LFT test - what is the difference?
Many patients are ordered both RFT and LFT together and ask about the difference:
| Test | Full form | What it checks | Price at Chughtai Lab |
|---|---|---|---|
| RFT | Renal Function Test | Kidney health - Creatinine, Urea, eGFR | Rs. 1,800 |
| LFT | Liver Function Test | Liver health - ALT, AST, Bilirubin, Albumin | Separate price |
When both are ordered together (LFT + RFT), both can be done from the same blood sample in one home sampling visit. This is common in routine health checkups, pre-operative assessments, and monitoring of patients on long-term medications.
