Purpose of the Test

Skeletal survey is a comprehensive imaging exam that involves X-rays of various parts of the body. It is performed to detect skeletal abnormalities, fractures, or bone injuries in infants, young children, and adults with suspected child abuse, metabolic bone disorders, or multiple myeloma.

When this test is required

A skeletal survey may be requested when a doctor suspects a bone injury or disease, or when there is concern about possible child abuse. It may also be requested to diagnose conditions such as osteoporosis or bone cancer, or to monitor the progress of treatment.

What the Test Detects

A skeletal survey is an X-ray examination of all the bones in the body. It includes X-rays of the skull, chest, pelvis, spine, and all of the limbs.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific preparation required for a skeletal survey. Patients will need to remove any clothing or jewelry that may interfere with the X-ray examination.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for a skeletal survey.

Additional Notes

A skeletal survey involves exposure to radiation, which can increase the risk of cancer. However, the amount of radiation used in a skeletal survey is generally considered to be safe. The risks and benefits of the test should be discussed with a doctor before the examination is performed. It is also important to note that a skeletal survey is not always able to detect all bone injuries or abnormalities, and additional testing may be required if there is still concern.
