Purpose of the Test

A KUB X-ray may be ordered by a healthcare provider to help diagnose or monitor conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney stones, bladder tumors, and other abnormalities in the urinary system.

When this test is required

Your healthcare provider may recommend a KUB X-ray if you are experiencing symptoms such as pain or discomfort in the abdomen or back, frequent urination, or blood in the urine. The test may also be ordered if a healthcare provider suspects a urinary tract abnormality, such as a tumor, or as part of a routine medical examination.

What the Test Detects

An X-ray of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (KUB) creates an image of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The image can provide information about the size, shape, and position of these organs and detect any abnormalities such as kidney stones, tumors, or other urinary tract problems.

Preparation for the Test

There is no special preparation required for a KUB X-ray. However, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown and remove any jewelry or metal objects from your abdomen and pelvis region, as they can interfere with the X-ray image. It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or have any medical conditions that may affect the test results. If you are undergoing any other medical tests or procedures that involve the use of contrast material, such as a CT scan or MRI, you should inform your healthcare provider beforehand.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for a KUB X-ray. The test involves taking an X-ray image of the abdomen and pelvis region, which is a painless and non-invasive procedure.

Additional Notes

The KUB X-ray uses a small amount of radiation to create an image of the urinary system, which is generally considered safe. However, pregnant women should inform their healthcare provider before undergoing the test, as radiation can be harmful to the developing fetus. Additionally, patients with metal implants or devices in their abdomen and pelvis region may not be able to undergo the test. It is important to follow any instructions given by your healthcare provider before and after the test to ensure accurate results. The test may require you to drink a contrast material or receive an enema to help enhance the visibility of certain organs or structures on the X-ray image.
