Purpose of the Test

A lateral humerus X-ray is typically performed to evaluate fractures, dislocations, or other injuries to the humerus bone in the arm. It can also be used to assess conditions such as arthritis or osteoporosis.

When this test is required

A lateral humerus X-ray may be requested if you have experienced an injury to the arm or shoulder and your healthcare provider suspects a fracture, dislocation, or other injury to the humerus bone. It may also be ordered to monitor the healing process after a fracture or dislocation.

What the Test Detects

A lateral humerus X-ray produces an image of the humerus bone in the arm from a side view. The image can show the bone structure and any abnormalities, such as fractures, dislocations, or signs of arthritis.

Preparation for the Test

No specific test preparation is needed for a lateral humerus X-ray. You may be asked to remove any jewelry or metal objects that could interfere with the imaging.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

As with all X-rays, the lateral humerus X-ray uses a small amount of radiation to produce the image. However, the amount of radiation exposure is considered safe and the benefits of the test generally outweigh the risks. If you are pregnant, you should inform your healthcare provider before undergoing any X-ray.
