Purpose of the Test

This test may be ordered by a healthcare provider to diagnose or monitor various conditions such as pneumonia, lung cancer, tuberculosis, congestive heart failure, chest trauma or injury, and other respiratory conditions.

When this test is required

A Chest X-ray in PA view may be requested by a healthcare provider when a person is experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, or wheezing. It may also be ordered as part of a routine medical checkup or pre-employment screening.

What the Test Detects

X-Ray of the Chest in PA view (Posterior-Anterior) is used to visualize the structures of the chest, including the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and bones. The X-ray machine sends a small amount of radiation through the chest, which is absorbed differently by the various tissues, creating an image that can be used to diagnose various respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

Preparation for the Test

Usually, no special preparation is needed for a chest X-ray. However, you may be asked to remove any jewelry, clothing, or other objects that may interfere with the imaging process. You may also be asked to wear a hospital gown. If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, you should inform your healthcare provider before the test as special precautions may need to be taken to minimize radiation exposure to the fetus.

Sample Requirements

X-ray imaging does not require any samples or specimens to be taken from the patient.

Additional Notes

It is important to inform the healthcare provider performing the X-ray if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, as special precautions may need to be taken to minimize radiation exposure to the fetus. Additionally, if you have any metal implants in your chest or are wearing jewelry or clothing that may interfere with the imaging process, you should inform the healthcare provider before the test.
