Purpose of the Test

An X-ray of the calcaneus (heel bone) may be performed to diagnose fractures, dislocations, and other injuries or conditions affecting the heel. It is also used to evaluate and monitor the progress of treatment for these conditions.

When this test is required

A calcaneus X-ray may be requested if a patient is experiencing heel pain or if there is a suspected injury or condition affecting the heel. It may also be ordered as a follow-up to treatment for a previously diagnosed heel injury. A doctor may also order a calcaneus X-ray to evaluate bone density in the heel as part of a bone density test.

What the Test Detects

A calcaneus X-ray is an imaging test that uses X-rays to produce images of the heel bone. Two views are typically taken: an anterior-posterior (AP) view and a lateral (LAT) view.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is required for a calcaneus X-ray. Patients will need to remove any clothing or jewelry that may interfere with the X-ray examination.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for a calcaneus X-ray. The test is non-invasive and involves only the use of X-rays.

Additional Notes

A calcaneus X-ray involves exposure to radiation, which can increase the risk of cancer. However, the amount of radiation used in a calcaneus X-ray is generally considered to be safe. The risks and benefits of the test should be discussed with a doctor before the examination is performed. It is also important to note that a calcaneus X-ray is not always able to detect all heel injuries or abnormalities, and additional testing may be required if there is still concern.
