Purpose of the Test

Bone age studies are usually ordered by pediatricians, endocrinologists, or orthopedists when they suspect a growth problem or a hormonal imbalance in a child. It can also be done periodically to monitor the progress of a treatment.

What the Test Detects

Bone age studies assess the maturity of a child’s bone development by comparing X-ray images of the left hand and wrist to standardized reference images for different ages and genders. The study determines the skeletal age, which may differ from the child’s chronological age.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is required for a bone age study. However, it is recommended to wear loose-fitting clothing and to remove any jewelry or metal objects that might interfere with the X-ray image.

There is no specific sample required for a bone age study. It is a type of X-ray that is taken of the left hand and wrist.

Additional Notes

Bone age studies are not harmful and involve a very low amount of radiation exposure. However, repeated exposure to radiation can be harmful, especially in children. The test is not recommended for pregnant women as radiation exposure can harm the developing fetus.
