Purpose of the Test

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) IgM antibody test is used to detect the presence of IgM antibodies against the VZV virus. The test is ordered to diagnose or confirm a current or recent VZV infection, usually chickenpox or shingles.

When this test is required

The test is requested when someone has signs and symptoms of a VZV infection or has been exposed to someone with the infection. The test may also be requested when a pregnant woman has been exposed to someone with VZV and there is a concern that she may have contracted the virus.

What the Test Detects

The test detects the presence of IgM antibodies that the body produces in response to a VZV infection. IgM antibodies are the first type of antibodies produced by the body in response to a new infection, and they usually start appearing in the blood within a week or two after the infection. The presence of VZV IgM antibodies indicates a current or recent infection.

Preparation for the Test

No specific test preparation is needed.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test.

Additional Notes

The test can sometimes give false-positive or false-negative results. It’s important to interpret the results in the context of the person’s clinical history, symptoms, and other test results. The test is not used to determine immunity to VZV or to monitor the effectiveness of the VZV vaccine.
