Purpose of the Test

A urine glucose test after 2.5 hours of a glucose challenge may be done to check for gestational diabetes or diabetes mellitus.

When this test is required

This test is usually requested during pregnancy to check for gestational diabetes. It can also be requested if your healthcare provider suspects you have diabetes mellitus.

What the Test Detects

The urine glucose test after 2.5 hours of a glucose challenge measures the amount of glucose in the urine after a glucose challenge.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, you will need to fast for 8-12 hours. You will then be given a glucose solution to drink, and your blood glucose level will be measured after 2.5 hours. A urine sample will be collected after 2.5 hours to check for glucose levels.

Sample Requirements

A sample of your urine is required for this test.

Additional Notes

If you have a positive urine glucose test after a glucose challenge, your healthcare provider may recommend further testing, such as a glucose tolerance test, to confirm the diagnosis of gestational diabetes or diabetes mellitus. Additionally, urine glucose testing is not a substitute for blood glucose testing, which is the primary diagnostic test for gestational diabetes and diabetes mellitus.
