Purpose of the Test

The urea clearance test is a medical test that is used to measure how well the kidneys are filtering waste products from the blood. It is also used to evaluate the effectiveness of dialysis treatment in patients with kidney failure.

When this test is required

The results of the test will vary depending on the patient’s age, sex, weight, and other individual factors. In general, a lower clearance rate indicates poorer kidney function, while a higher clearance rate indicates better kidney function. However, a healthcare provider will take into account all of the patient’s individual factors when interpreting the results of the test.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the clearance rate of urea from the blood, which is an indicator of kidney function. The results of the test can be used to help diagnose kidney disease, assess the severity of kidney failure, and determine the appropriate course of treatment for patients with kidney failure.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is typically needed for the test, although a healthcare provider may give specific instructions depending on the patient’s individual circumstances.

Sample Requirements

To perform the test, a blood sample and a urine sample are collected. The patient is asked to empty their bladder, and then a measured dose of urea is injected into a vein. After a period of time, another blood and urine sample are collected. The difference in the amount of urea in the blood and urine samples is used to calculate the rate at which the kidneys are able to clear urea from the blood.
