Purpose of the Test

Ultrasound of the adult hip joint is done to evaluate the hip joint for various conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, synovitis, and other soft tissue abnormalities.

When this test is required

It is ordered when a patient has hip pain, discomfort, stiffness, or difficulty in moving the hip joint. It can also be done to monitor the progression of a known condition or to guide treatment, such as joint injections.

What the Test Detects

The ultrasound exam of the hip joint uses sound waves to produce images of the structures inside the hip, including bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and other soft tissues. The test evaluates the shape, size, and condition of the joint, assesses the amount of fluid present in the joint, and checks for any abnormalities.

Preparation for the Test

Generally, no special preparation is needed. Patients may be asked to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and remove any jewelry or metal objects from the hip area.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

Ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive test that does not use ionizing radiation, making it a preferred imaging modality for many conditions. However, it may not be as sensitive as other imaging tests, such as MRI or CT, for detecting certain hip joint abnormalities.
