Purpose of the Test

TRUS-guided biopsy is a medical procedure that involves taking small samples of tissue from the prostate gland using a needle that is guided by ultrasound imaging. This procedure is typically performed to diagnose or rule out prostate cancer.

When this test is required

TRUS-guided biopsy is typically requested if a patient has an elevated PSA level or an abnormal DRE, or if imaging tests have revealed suspicious findings in the prostate gland. It may also be used to monitor the progression of prostate cancer or to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

What the Test Detects

Preparation for the Test

The procedure itself typically takes about 30 minutes and is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Patients may experience discomfort or pain during the procedure, and may also experience some bleeding or discomfort afterwards. Patients should follow any post-procedure instructions given by their healthcare provider, including avoiding strenuous activity and taking any prescribed medications as directed.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required from the patient before the procedure. However, patients may need to undergo a bowel preparation to empty the rectum prior to the biopsy. Patients may also need to temporarily stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, before the procedure.

Additional Notes

It’s important to note that a TRUS-guided biopsy is not always accurate in detecting prostate cancer, and false negative results can occur. Additionally, the biopsy can sometimes miss cancer cells if they are located in an area that is not sampled. Patients should discuss the benefits and risks of TRUS-guided biopsy with their healthcare provider and weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before undergoing the procedure. During the procedure, patients may experience discomfort or pain, and may also experience bleeding or discomfort afterwards. Patients should follow any post-procedure instructions given by their healthcare provider, including avoiding strenuous activity and taking any prescribed medications as directed. Patients may also need to undergo additional testing or follow-up appointments depending on the results of the biopsy.
