Purpose of the Test

TRUCUT USG-guided biopsy is used to obtain tissue samples from a suspicious mass or lesion, typically in the breast, liver, or other organs, for examination under a microscope to diagnose or rule out cancer or other abnormalities.

When this test is required

The biopsy is typically requested when imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI have revealed a suspicious mass or lesion that requires further evaluation. It may also be used to monitor the progression of cancer or to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. During the procedure, a needle is inserted through the skin and into the mass or lesion using ultrasound guidance, and a small tissue sample is collected for examination. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and can take about 30-60 minutes to complete.

What the Test Detects

Preparation for the Test

Patients should follow any post-procedure instructions given by their healthcare provider, including avoiding strenuous activity and taking any prescribed medications as directed. Patients may also need to undergo additional testing or follow-up appointments depending on the results of the biopsy.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required from the patient before the biopsy. However, patients may be instructed to avoid aspirin or other blood-thinning medications before the procedure, and to follow any other specific instructions given by their healthcare provider.

Additional Notes

After the biopsy, the tissue sample will be sent to a laboratory for examination. Patients should follow any post-procedure instructions given by their healthcare provider and attend any follow-up appointments as directed. It’s important to discuss the benefits and risks of the biopsy with your healthcare provider and to address any questions or concerns you may have. Patients may need to follow specific instructions or precautions before the biopsy, such as avoiding food or drink for a certain period of time before the procedure or stopping certain medications. They may also need to arrange for someone to drive them home afterwards if they receive sedation or anesthesia. Patients may experience some discomfort or pain during the procedure, and may also experience bleeding or discomfort afterwards. In some cases, patients may need to stay in the hospital for a short period of time for observation.
