Purpose of the Test

A thyroid ultrasound is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck and produces hormones that regulate metabolism. The ultrasound can help detect abnormalities, such as nodules or cysts, and evaluate blood flow to the area. It may also be used to guide a biopsy or other procedure.

When this test is required

A thyroid ultrasound may be requested by a healthcare provider if you have symptoms such as swelling or lumps in the neck, difficulty swallowing, or changes in voice quality. It may also be ordered as part of a routine exam, especially for individuals with a history of thyroid problems or who are at risk for developing them.

What the Test Detects

A thyroid ultrasound is used to evaluate the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck and produces hormones that regulate metabolism. The ultrasound can detect abnormalities, such as nodules or cysts, and evaluate blood flow to the area. It may also be used to guide a biopsy or other procedure.

Preparation for the Test

There is usually no special preparation needed for a thyroid ultrasound. You may be asked to wear a gown or loose clothing that allows easy access to your neck. The test is performed by placing a small, handheld device called a transducer on your neck, which emits sound waves that bounce off your thyroid gland and create images that can be viewed on a monitor. You may be asked to move or turn your head during the test to obtain images from different angles. It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you have had a prior thyroid biopsy or surgery, as this may affect the interpretation of the test results.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for a scrotal ultrasound.

Additional Notes

During the test, the patient lies on their back with their neck extended, and a technician applies a warm gel to the skin over the thyroid gland. A handheld device called a transducer is then passed over the area, emitting high-frequency sound waves that bounce off the thyroid gland and produce images on a computer screen. USG of the thyroid is a safe and painless procedure that does not involve radiation exposure. However, it may be contraindicated in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to ultrasound gel or in those with a tracheostomy or other surgical opening in the neck.
