Patients should discuss the benefits and risks of therapeutic TAP with their healthcare provider, and follow any specific instructions or preparations provided before the procedure. They should also attend any follow-up appointments as directed and inform their healthcare provider of any symptoms or concerns they experience after the procedure. Patients may experience some discomfort or pain during the procedure, and may also experience some numbness or weakness in the abdomen afterwards. They may need to avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for a period of time after the procedure. During the procedure, patients will lie on their back, and a small ultrasound device will be used to locate the transversus abdominis muscle. A needle will then be inserted through the skin and into the muscle, and local anesthetic will be injected into the muscle. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and can take about 15-30 minutes to complete.
