Purpose of the Test

Penile doppler ultrasound is used to diagnose erectile dysfunction, a condition in which a man has difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. The test can also identify other conditions that affect penile blood flow, such as Peyronie’s disease or penile trauma.

When this test is required

A penile doppler ultrasound may be requested if a man is experiencing erectile dysfunction, particularly if other treatments have been unsuccessful. The test may also be recommended if there are other symptoms that suggest a problem with penile blood flow.

What the Test Detects

Penile doppler ultrasound evaluates blood flow to the penis. The test measures the speed and direction of blood flow in the arteries and veins of the penis.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, the patient may be asked to avoid caffeine and smoking for a few hours. It is also important to inform the doctor if the patient is taking any medications, especially those that affect blood flow.
