Purpose of the Test

Ultrasound (USG) of the pelvis is a diagnostic test that uses sound waves to produce images of the organs and structures in the pelvic area, including the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and prostate gland. It helps to evaluate various medical conditions such as: Abnormal uterine bleeding, Pelvic pain or pressure, Suspected ovarian cysts or tumors, Infertility, Suspected prostate enlargement or cancer, Urinary incontinence or other bladder problems

When this test is required

An ultrasound of the pelvis may be requested by a doctor when a patient is experiencing symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, or discomfort. It may also be recommended as a routine screening test for women during their gynecologic exams, especially if they have a family history of certain conditions, such as ovarian cancer.

What the Test Detects

An ultrasound of the pelvis is used to evaluate the organs and structures in the pelvic area, including the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and prostate gland. It helps to identify any abnormalities, such as cysts, tumors, or other growths, in these organs.

Preparation for the Test

The preparation for an ultrasound of the pelvis may vary depending on the area being examined. In general, patients are advised to drink plenty of water and avoid urinating for one hour before the test to ensure that the bladder is full. Patients should also wear loose-fitting clothing and remove any metal objects, such as jewelry or belts, from the pelvic area. It is essential to follow the doctor’s instructions on preparation before the test. In some cases, a transvaginal ultrasound may be performed, which requires a special probe to be inserted into the vagina. In such cases, the doctor will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for an ultrasound of the abdomen.

Additional Notes

Ultrasound of the pelvis is a safe and non-invasive test that does not use radiation. It is a painless procedure that usually takes 30-60 minutes to complete. The patient may need to change into a hospital gown for the test and lie down on an exam table. The doctor may ask the patient to change positions or hold their breath during the procedure to get a better view of the organs. After the test, the patient can resume their normal activities. The doctor will review the results of the ultrasound and discuss any findings with the patient. In some cases, additional tests, such as a biopsy or MRI, may be needed to confirm or further evaluate any abnormalities found on the ultrasound.
