Purpose of the Test

When this test is required

This test is requested by obstetricians or healthcare providers for women who are carrying twin fetuses during the third trimester of pregnancy. It may be recommended more frequently in cases where there are concerns about fetal growth or well-being.

What the Test Detects

This test uses ultrasound waves to produce images of the twin fetuses and evaluate their growth, movement, breathing, and amniotic fluid volume. The biophysical profile evaluates the fetal well-being by assessing the fetal heart rate, fetal breathing, fetal movements, and amniotic fluid volume.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is needed for this test. The pregnant woman may be asked to come with a full bladder to improve the visualization of the pelvic organs.

Additional Notes

This test is a non-invasive and safe procedure for both the mother and the twin fetuses. The ultrasound technician will apply a water-based gel to the mother’s abdomen and use a transducer to produce images of the twin fetuses. The test usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
