Purpose of the Test

A color Doppler ultrasound of the right lower extremity is performed to evaluate the blood flow in the arteries and veins of the leg. It is often done to diagnose deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peripheral artery disease (PAD), or other blood vessel-related problems.

When this test is required

This test may be requested when a patient has symptoms such as leg pain, swelling, redness, or warmth, which may be signs of a blood clot or other blood vessel-related problems. It may also be ordered as a screening test in people with risk factors for PAD.

What the Test Detects

The test uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the blood vessels in the leg. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin, and a transducer (a handheld device that sends and receives sound waves) is moved over the area. The sound waves bounce off the blood cells and produce images that can be viewed on a monitor.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is usually required for a color Doppler ultrasound of the right lower extremity. However, the patient may be asked to wear loose-fitting clothing and remove any jewelry from the area being scanned.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

A color Doppler ultrasound of the right lower extremity is a non-invasive test and is generally considered safe. There are no known risks associated with the test. However, as with any medical procedure, there may be some discomfort or pain during the test.
