Purpose of the Test

KUB ultrasound (Kidney, Ureter, Bladder) is a diagnostic test that uses sound waves to produce images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It helps evaluate various medical conditions such as: Urinary tract infections, Kidney stones, Enlargement of the prostate gland, Tumors or cysts in the urinary system, Congenital abnormalities of the urinary system, Bladder prolapse, Blood in urine

When this test is required

The USG KUB is commonly requested to evaluate patients who present with symptoms such as abdominal or back pain, blood in the urine, difficulty urinating, or recurrent urinary tract infections. It may also be used to monitor the progress of known urinary tract conditions or to assess the function of the urinary tract in patients with other medical conditions.

What the Test Detects

Ultra Sound (USG) KUB stands for ultrasound of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the organs in the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.

Preparation for the Test

The preparation for a KUB ultrasound is minimal. Patients are advised to drink plenty of water before the test and avoid urinating for a while to fill the bladder. Patients should also wear loose-fitting clothing and remove any metal objects, such as jewelry or belts, from the abdominal and pelvic areas. It is essential to follow the doctor’s instructions on preparation before the test. In some cases, a transabdominal or transrectal ultrasound may be performed, which requires a special probe to be inserted into the rectum. In such cases, the doctor will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for the test. It is important to inform the doctor if the patient has any allergies or is pregnant before the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for an ultrasound of the abdomen.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that the USG KUB is a safe and painless procedure and does not use any radiation. The results of the test are usually available within a few days and will be reviewed by a radiologist who will provide a report to the referring healthcare provider. During the test, the patient lies on a table, and a special gel is applied to the skin over the area being examined. The technician then moves a small handheld device called a transducer over the skin, which emits sound waves that bounce off the organs in the urinary tract and create images on a monitor.
