Purpose of the Test

An ultrasound of the gallbladder is typically ordered to assess for the presence of gallstones or other abnormalities that may be causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or jaundice. It can also be used to evaluate the size and function of the gallbladder.

When this test is required

An ultrasound of the gallbladder may be requested if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or jaundice that may be related to gallbladder disease. It can also be ordered as a screening test in people who are at higher risk for developing gallstones.

What the Test Detects

An ultrasound of the gallbladder uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the gallbladder and surrounding structures. It can detect the presence of gallstones, as well as other abnormalities such as inflammation, thickening of the gallbladder wall, or tumors.

Preparation for the Test

For an ultrasound of the gallbladder, the patient may be asked to fast for several hours before the test to ensure that the gallbladder is adequately distended. They may also be asked to drink water before the test to help improve the visualization of the gallbladder.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for an ultrasound of the gallbladder.

Additional Notes

An ultrasound of the gallbladder is a non-invasive, safe, and painless procedure. It does not use ionizing radiation, making it a preferred imaging modality for pregnant women or those who cannot tolerate other types of imaging. However, it may not be as sensitive as other imaging modalities, such as a CT scan, for detecting certain types of gallbladder disease.
