Purpose of the Test

The carotid Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging test that is used to evaluate blood flow in the carotid arteries that supply the brain with blood.

When this test is required

A carotid Doppler ultrasound may be requested if a patient has symptoms of carotid artery disease, such as transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), stroke, or high blood pressure. The test is also used to monitor the progression of carotid artery disease in patients who are at high risk of stroke, such as those with a history of smoking, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

What the Test Detects

The carotid Doppler ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging test that is used to evaluate blood flow in the carotid arteries that supply the brain with blood. The test helps to detect any blockages, narrowing or hardening of the arteries that can reduce blood flow and increase the risk of stroke or other cardiovascular diseases.

Preparation for the Test

It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions and attend the appointment on time. The test is non-invasive and generally painless, with no significant risks or side effects. The results of the test will be interpreted by a doctor and used to guide further diagnosis and treatment. If a blockage or narrowing is detected, the doctor may order further tests, such as an MRI or CT scan, or prescribe medications to reduce the risk of stroke.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test, and no special preparation is typically needed. However, patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking anything for several hours before the test to improve the accuracy of the results. Patients should also inform their doctor if they are taking any medications that affect blood clotting, as they may need to stop taking them before the test.
