Purpose of the Test

To evaluate breast lumps or other abnormalities found during a physical exam or mammogram. To determine the nature of a breast mass or lump, such as whether it is solid or fluid-filled (cystic). To assess breast tissue in women with dense breasts, as dense breast tissue can make it difficult to detect breast cancer on a mammogram. To monitor changes in the breast tissue over time.

When this test is required

The USG of both breasts is typically requested as a screening tool for women who are at higher risk of breast cancer, or for women who have found a lump or other abnormality in their breast during a self-exam or clinical exam. It can also be used as a follow-up to a mammogram if the mammogram shows an abnormality that requires further investigation.

What the Test Detects

Ultra Sound (USG) of both breasts is a diagnostic test used to examine the breast tissue for the presence of any lumps, masses, or abnormalities that may indicate breast cancer or other breast conditions.

Preparation for the Test

Typically, no special preparation is needed for an ultrasound of both breasts. You should wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing jewelry or clothing with metal fasteners that may interfere with the imaging. You may be asked to remove clothing from the waist up and wear a gown during the procedure. It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you have breast implants.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for an ultrasound of both breasts. This is a non-invasive test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the breast tissue.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that while the USG is an effective diagnostic tool, it is not a replacement for a mammogram, which is still considered the gold standard for breast cancer screening. Women should discuss with their healthcare provider which screening tests are right for them based on their individual risk factors. During the USG of both breasts, the patient will lie on an exam table with one arm raised above their head. A water-based gel is applied to the breast area, and the technician will use a hand-held transducer to scan the breast tissue. The procedure is painless and non-invasive, and typically takes 15-30 minutes to complete.
