Purpose of the Test

Bilateral shoulder ultrasound is performed to evaluate the soft tissues and structures of the shoulders, including tendons, muscles, ligaments, and joints. It is used to diagnose a variety of conditions such as rotator cuff tears, bursitis, tendinitis, impingement syndrome, and arthritis.

When this test is required

A bilateral shoulder ultrasound may be requested by a doctor if you have symptoms of shoulder pain, swelling, stiffness, or limited range of motion. It may also be used to monitor the progress of a condition or treatment.

What the Test Detects

The ultrasound technician will use a handheld device called a transducer to produce high-frequency sound waves that will bounce off the tissues in the shoulder area. These echoes will create images of the internal structures of the shoulder joint, which can be viewed on a monitor.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific preparation needed for a bilateral shoulder ultrasound. However, you may be asked to wear loose clothing or a gown and remove any jewelry or clothing that covers the shoulder area.
