Purpose of the Test

Tympanometry is a test that measures the movement of the eardrum in response to changes in air pressure. It can help diagnose certain ear conditions, such as fluid in the middle ear or a perforated eardrum.

When this test is required

Tympanometry may be requested by an audiologist or other healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms of ear problems or as part of a routine hearing evaluation.

What the Test Detects

During tympanometry, a probe is placed in the ear canal and air pressure is changed to measure the movement of the eardrum. The results of the test can show how well the middle ear is functioning and can help diagnose conditions such as otitis media or eustachian tube dysfunction
