Purpose of the Test

Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are a type of medication used to treat depression, anxiety, and other conditions. Testing may be done to monitor TCA levels in the blood to ensure that they are at therapeutic levels and not at toxic levels, which can cause side effects.

When this test is required

The test may be requested by a healthcare provider when a person is starting TCA therapy, and periodically thereafter to ensure that the dose is appropriate and that there are no adverse effects.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the amount of tricyclic antidepressants in the blood, such as amitriptyline, desipramine, imipramine, nortriptyline, and others.

Preparation for the Test

Typically, no test preparation is needed, but your healthcare provider may provide specific instructions depending on the situation.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required.

Additional Notes

It is important to take TCAs only as directed by a healthcare provider. If you experience side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Also, note that other medications and substances can interact with TCAs, so it is important to inform your healthcare provider of any medications or supplements you are taking.
